A note from our director

A lantern does not have to be big to be useful

People often ask about our name. In the early days the electricity on our street was, let us say, creative, and the lantern over our door was how mothers found us at night with a feverish child. It became our promise: there will always be a light on, and someone inside who cares.

My job is to make sure our doctors and nurses have what they need, that the waiting room stays calm, that the pharmacy shelves hold only genuine medicines, and that every family is treated the way I would want my own mother treated.

If we ever fall short, please tell me. I am usually at the front desk in the mornings, and the kettle is usually on.

Our journey

How the lantern grew

  1. 2009

    Two rooms and a lantern

Maple Lantern opens on Awolowo Avenue with one doctor, one nurse and a waiting room of six chairs.

  2. 2012

    Baby clinic begins

A Tuesday baby clinic starts. Within a year it is so popular that we add Thursdays too.

  3. 2016

    Our own little lab

An in-house laboratory opens, so a malaria test or blood count no longer means a trip across town.

  4. 2019

    The pharmacy opens

A small pharmacy, run by a registered pharmacist and stocked only from approved distributors.

  5. 2024

    A room for mothers

The back of the building becomes a private women's clinic room, and Saturday classes for mothers-to-be begin.
